In the past, I disliked Arsenal in much the same way that I disliked any title contenders to Utd, but over the last two or three seasons I have developed a soft spot for the Londoners. Some will suggest this is because they have simply not challenged the current champions. My love for football has been rekindled these past few years however and the issue of whether or not they are title rivals is irrelevant. I like and in fact respect Arsenal purely for footballing reasons. On so many occasions now I have been amazed at the purity of their football, the ease with which they move the ball around teams and counter attack with such intent. Quite simply, they are great to watch.

On Sunday they disappointed me however, and not just because the result saw Chelsea move five points clear of Utd at the summit of the table. Arsenal can destroy teams outside the Big Four monopoly and are arguably becoming more consistent at doing so. Yet they are still struggling to put the ball in the net during those important matches against the big teams. Chelsea were too powerful for Arsenal and whilst the Gunners played some beautiful stuff, they ultimately came away with nothing. Two quick goals killed them, in much the same way that two quick goals killed the game against Utd back at the start of the season. Back then Arsenal were much the better team but to my fortune that day they couldn’t translate that dominance into three points. I was hoping that they could really announce themselves in the title race with the match on home soil, for I enjoy a competitive Premier League, but once again Wenger has come away looking slightly lost.

I feel for Wenger because I admire the culture he has created at the club and his team is full of incredible talent as well as some big name players. I just hope they can pick themselves up and turn things around next time they face their London rivals. Of course it would be nice if they could allow Utd another three points when the teams meet at the Emirates.

I hope the answer to this question is no, purely for the good of society.

I have been working part time in a local hotel for a couple of months now, and have thus far thoroughly enjoyed myself. The leisure center members are a lovely bunch, the hotel itself is situated in beautiful surroundings and the staff are on the whole very nice. In fact those I work directly with are fantastic. Yet there are a few that really disappoint me.

The hotel kitchen has not been a very welcoming environment to me, and at times I dread having to walk in there. When delivering food orders, I walk in and act my usual friendly self with a polite “hello” and “how are you doing?”. I proceed to make obvious my presence there, flashing my food order. What follows is the coldest of responses, for no one has responded to my “hello” and in fact the chefs have barely taken the trouble to make significant eye contact with me. After standing in the kitchen, ignored, for around 30 seconds I officially feel like a complete, for want of a better word, twat. When someone finally takes the trouble to walk over to me and acknowledge the food order, not a word is said. I continue to stand there like a fool whilst the chef reads the order, before he turns his back on me having successfully ignored my presence for this whole encounter.

Every visit to the kitchen is a near identical repeat of this.

I struggle to understand how basic conversation and politeness escapes these chefs; all I desire is a simple recognition that I exist. A simple “hello,” “hey” or “alright?” would suffice. I would even be happy with grunt, some form of noise. But apparently this is impossible for these people. What confuses me further is why they seem almost insulted by my presence in their kitchen. Forgive me if I’m wrong, but surely it is their job to cook the food that is ordered. If I didn’t come in with orders, would they not be out of a job? I’m sure there are nice chefs out there somewhere; I still believe there is goodness in the world.
